Darlene Cavalier Cheers On Girls That Love Science

But quarks? Fusion? How does the theory of relativity? If all this sounds like a good science jargon, tone of the research, it is time for you to Brain makeover. And who better to promote self-esteem when the research team in Science in providing encouragement, a group calling cheerleaders cheer in promoting science literacy, one at a time.

Professional cheerleaders in this video is not just rooted in science, they engage in it. That's right - the researcher or the cheerleaders Kisakoor researchers as you want. Do not usually figure aerospace engineers pompoms molecular biologists and shouting cheers? Well, you're going.

Science is providing encouragement ScienceCheerleader.com half of the project, founded by Darlene Cavalier's blog.

I had the honor to talk to Darlene about the blog and Science in providing encouragement. Darlene talked about the success, challenges, and how he himself was initially a skeptic.

Prior to the establishment of a genuine science of animation, was a cheerleader in Science, a blog. Darlene passionate about finding a voice of science and the general public's position in science ceased operating in both his work at the University of Pennsylvania, and to create a site. Darlene spoke ScienceCheerleader.com three initial objectives:

One was to increase the scientific literacy of adults. The second was really possible more regular member of the public to join the way of scientific activity. And then we really wanted to focus on the authority of citizen scientists ... require a mechanism ... enabling participatory technology assessment ... and, finally, more inclusive assessment of the technology discussions.

Thanks to Professor James Trefil of George Mason University, where Darlene has a fuse in his enthusiasm for science enthusiasm made him again a professional cheerleader with the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team.

Professor Trefi ... is a book called Why Science? and [another book] Science issues. They are directed by other people as well as universities to better understand why more adults should kirjaoskaja science and what it means.

He took it up to 10 step 18-step forward, says: "Here is what it means to be literate in science. This is the reason why it is important ... And here is the 18 things that ought to know." ... Most people do not take any chances, so they do not want to criticize other people leaving things on certain points. I love the approach and to be honest I did not understand. So I met him and said: "What do you think ... are the 18 concepts attractive to a much broader audience?"

Science in providing encouragement and then were born. Darlene ask for the old team since the 76ers to help him and Professor Trefil with the first project: Brain Makeover (the top). Brain Makeover consists of different videos to show one of the 76ers Cheerleaders reciting one of Professor Trefil's 1918 cheer conditions. Below the video, see the fact is acknowledged that helps you better each concept. If you've learned all 18 of the facts, you can test your knowledge quiz. (Did you lose with 80%?)

Brain Science makeover and providing encouragement were certainly a hit, I can spread them out Internet coverage on Fox News. Although the response was very positive, Darlene does not face severe criticism.

Much of this is for me to see how people react to a better understanding of how the project evolves. An excellent example is the fact that many people loved [Brain Makeover], because it was risky, and there were people who did not like this, which was completely offended - not so much that the women were Kisakoor equipment, but these women were not no scientific background whatsoever. So I took it to heart and decided to focus a little more energy to actually work of professional cheerleaders, who are scientists and engineers, and this was an excellent route.

For those who think, research professionals have a lot of cheerleaders and some of the range, think again. ScienceCheerleader.com has interviewed dozens of women who work in the fields of science and cheer for professional drivers, sports clubs throughout the country. As Darlene says:

They're an incredibly free, they are passionate about - it's their lives. They are all completely optional ... So it is genuine and it is genuine.

Darlene told me that he could identify the women, and combating stereotypes.

I definitely will not be affected by it, because almost every one of them ... feel in their lives, they live in two different worlds. Day, I was one person in a professional equipment ... and at night I had the time of my life cheering the Philadelphia 76ers for Charles Barkley.

Darlene said that this battle seemed to point out that middle school age - turning point in time, especially girls, when they feel like they must be either / or alternatives. Cheerleading or science. When a popular or wise. What ScienceCheerleader.com work to demonstrate the science and providing encouragement, embody the ability to do both. While providing encouragement Science does not initially intended for a younger demographic, the program will give young girls to take the things they love and continue the things they enjoy - especially if this thing is research.

I was a skeptic, in order to greatly alter the way children, especially girls, to start thinking about science, technology and science. I was supposed to be a believer, and just as I would become a devotee of a witness.

Darlene believed that after the encouraging letters from grateful moms cheerleaders' interviews with the spot - gave an interview Kisakoor, research-loving daughter anyone to identify with.

We do it all the time with athletes and rock stars and other celebrities, so why should not we do the female role models who are real?

Cheerleaders participated in the American Science and Engineering Festival in Washington DC in late October - the first concert and also the first meeting of Darlene women. This first appearance together with the previous positive feedback from the moment of performance can be Darlene.

It was the moms to read "emails. It was therefore less than in Washington [festival], and look at them girls - Little girls - come in and ask the cheerleaders' autographs, standing in line shaking my pompoms, doing all these cheers.

I myself wanted to cry looking at them thinking, "This is unreal - I can not believe it will happen."

Then we look at these interactions ... and listening to their dialogue - and I've never coached women, what to say. It is not painful, that the people who responded to the request to participate in [the U.S. Science and Engineering Festival] - and this was not planned - only 4 of them are minorities. So just watching them interact, I think it is incredibly empowering for the little girl and very cheerleader.

What's next Science in providing encouragement? More in-person presentations and tactics in order to change the science accessible for adults and children over Oncoming.

I wanted that, it's more of a social experiment. We did not set expectations too high. This was more a funny thing: Come see Science of animation, see how they are difficult to stereotype.

Now, I fully buy the concept. We have a very real opportunity to shape the minds of ... and a half million little cheerleaders in the U.S.. I do not want to spend much more time, which provides a very clear and concise plan, so it can be scaled away ... to ensure that we remain faithful to the message.

What began as half of the project is cheering them on their way to the minds of budding scientists and inspired the hearts of generations. Science in providing encouragement to cross-border appeal for generations of demographic, by combating stereotypes and scientific literacy with pompoms in hand.
