Michigan Wolverines Cheerleaders

General Information about the University of Michigan Cheer Team

The University of Michigan Cheer Team cheers at all home Football, and Men's and Women's Basketball games. The Michigan Cheer Team travels to all away Big Ten Football games and bowl games such as the Alamo®, Capital One®, Fiesta®, Hall of Fame®, Holiday®, Orange®, Outback® and Rose® Bowl Games. The Michigan Cheer Team also cheers at Big Ten® Conference Basketball Tournaments, NCAA® and NIT® Tournaments. Occasionally, the Michigan Cheer Team supports home Volleyball and Wrestling events.

In addition to games, Michigan Cheer Team athletes make appearances on behalf of the Department of Athletics and The University of Michigan. Many Michigan Cheer Team athletes also volunteer with local charitable organizations, especially Mott Children's Hospital and Michigan From the Heart.

The Michigan Cheer Team is a co-ed squad, with approximately 20 female and 20 male athletes. This year the Michigan Cheer Team will begin practice on August 23 and continue until the completion of Basketball season. Practices are held 2-3 times per week. Cheer athletes must also participate in strength training at the Natatorium Weight Room which is exclusive to University of Michigan student athletes. Practices are not scheduled during study days or exams.

There are no out of pocket expenses for Cheer Team athletes. All practice gear, uniforms, per diem and travel expenses are covered by the University of Michigan Athletic Department. Cheer Team athletes receive $ 150 per term for book expenses. There are also scholarships available through the Newt Loken Scholarship.

The Michigan Cheer Team will compete in the NCA National Cheerleading Championship held at Dayton Beach, Florida in early April 2011.
